A tough choice can arise when the duty to protect an individual conflicts with their right to choice. As a careworker, even though you must ensure their well-being, you should not forget about their rights.
A patient can choose to ignore some assessment or moderation in terms of treatment and that is fine. They are not confined or imprisoned; you should honour any such decision of theirs. If I feel that they need this treatment or their condition might worsen otherwise, then I must inform them about their actions and how they can lead to unwelcome consequences. If they still persist, then I will have no choice but to consult the Lead Operations Manager and note it down in my journal.
Sometimes patients can refuse medicines for whatever reason. A careworker should not give them medicines forcefully but rather politely with an informed set of instructions that not taking medicines can actually harm them much more than they think. It is a difficult task for sure yet a good careworker does not rush the actions; they sit down with patients, have a meaningful talk with them, and let them know how and why medications are important for their well-being.
Another case would be something like a patient refusing the necessary equipment. For example, if a patient is paralyzed or physically challenged and they need particular equipment to get well soon, but they refuse. What should you do, then? A carer’s job is to learn all about such a condition and make it an important part of their duty to let the patient know of the negative effects of refusing proper exercise. Once again, you will need to respect their values even if their decision is not in their best interests.
This is what Unit 3 of the Level 3 Diploma is all about. They help you learn a thing or two about the say an individual should have in their care. It guides you to work in a way where individuals can feel respected. This is both an ethical and moral dilemma, which is why there is no concrete answer to these issues. What would be the appropriate moves to make? You should not be overburdened; do not make them feel that they are a nuisance to you.
The primary purpose of your job is to bring them comfort, not to keep them annoyed and irritated. A smiling face can change a lot of things, so it is best if you remain polite and cheerful in your actions. Your hospitality might want them to reverse their decisions in their best interests. This way, they can get what they need and you can become a good careworker as well.
What is the End Result if a Careworker Does Not Respect an Individual’s Choices?
That is a nasty development in a care setting. There is no reason why a careworker should not respect the right to choice of an individual in their care. After all, the whole point of the care system is to care about an individual’s needs and wants. If they feel at the loss of autonomy and dignity, then it means you have failed as a careworker. Many careworkers do not realize this and think of it as something extra; these key points matter the most.
Not respecting an individual’s right to make a choice can result in severe psychological harm. They may feel like their emotional value does not exist. This is not caring; this is pushing someone towards the dark side. As a careworker, you should take notice of these things and let the individual know that their decisions are respected. If they feel neglected in terms of decision-making, then it can lead to anger and frustration. Another issue it could create is that they may never trust you anymore and further lose their belief in the care system as a whole.

Lack of respect on their end can deteriorate their bond with you. An individual in your care with a bad bond is not a good sound. It puts your reliability and credibility at risk. Diminishing communication, in such a scenario, can result in the downfall of your career as well as the individual’s health. It is a bad stain on your professional experience and you may never recover from that.
If you disregard their choices for long, it is possible that their actual needs or preferences may never be met. Remember, you are not taking care of little kids; these are all grown adults whose choices cannot be overruled unless it is a case of extreme emergency. If it is not a critical condition, then there is no reason why you should force your way against their choice.
It is often not mentioned enough but refusing their choices for long can lead to ethical and legal consequences. They may report you not as a carer but as an abuser. They would not do it out of malice but rather out of fear and lack of trust in you. That said, not respecting an individual’s right is a crime as per the Care Act 2014 of the UK. You could face legal claims, job loss, or disciplinary action.
You do not want to be remembered as someone who channels institutional abuse. Continual neglect of an individual’s right to make a choice can be recognized as an abuse. The main reason for that is that it can mean an individual’s physical and mental health could be at risk. Therefore, respecting their choices is one of your main responsibilities. Under no circumstances should you forget this; as mentioned above, only life-threatening conditions are when you can and should defy their personal choices.
